Alzheimer's Disease: Nearly Half Personally Know Someone Affected

Alzheimer's disease is a significant public health issue in Germany, affecting an estimated 1.2 million people. A recent representative study commissioned by the Alzheimer Forschung Initiative (AFI) found that nearly half (46 percent) of Germans personally know someone with the disease.

The study indicated that 18 percent of respondents reported having a family member with Alzheimer's, while 28 percent knew someone with the condition among their acquaintances. This prevalence was even higher among individuals over 60, with 55 percent reporting knowing someone affected by the disease, either within their family or social circle.

Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, with around 200,000 new diagnoses annually. Age is recognized as the primary risk factor. The survey underscores the widespread personal impact of the disease and the associated fear, particularly among those with a family history.

The Alzheimer Forschung Initiative e.V. is a non-profit organization that funds research into Alzheimer's disease and provides public information. Since 1995, the initiative has supported research projects and distributed over 800,000 informational materials.
