Amadeus: AI to complement airline revenue management

Amadeus IT Group has released an analysis detailing the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI (GenAI) on airline revenue management (RM) systems.

The company posits that AI will not supersede the decades-old science of RM but will instead complement it. Historically, airline revenue management has relied on established models to optimize pricing and seat availability. AI, however, introduces new capabilities for refining forecasts and optimization.

Amadeus identifies three key areas where AI offers the greatest promise: hybrid forecasting methods, integrated optimization for airfare and ancillary services pricing, and enhanced support for revenue management analysts. Hybrid models are designed to combine the strengths of traditional statistical methods with AI, leading to improved forecast accuracy, particularly in scenarios with limited historical data.

The analysis suggests that fully AI-driven models may underperform without the inherent business logic provided by classical methods, potentially leading to nonsensical outcomes. Amadeus' approach emphasizes integrating AI into existing frameworks to enhance data and forecasting capabilities.
