Amadeus: Airport Digital Transformation Accelerates with New Technologies

Amadeus IT Group observes that the digital transformation of airports is gaining momentum globally. Airports of all sizes are now integrating new technologies such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), biometrics, and digital identity to improve passenger experiences and streamline operations.

The transformation involves modernizing legacy systems, streamlining operational processes like check-in and border control, and enhancing data sharing among stakeholders. Amadeus highlights that new technologies can foster better collaboration between airlines, ground handlers, and authorities, leading to a more seamless travel experience for passengers.

The report identifies several challenges driving this digital shift, including physical space constraints at airports, outdated IT infrastructure, and data silos between various systems. Increasing passenger volumes, which reached nearly 9.5 billion in 2024, are intensifying the pressure to optimize operations within existing footprints.

Technological solutions, such as biometric identification, can automate passenger recognition at various touchpoints, from check-in and security to boarding. Amadeus suggests this can reduce the need for physical barriers and queues, thereby improving the passenger experience and airport capacity.
