Chinese mapping service Amap (AutoNavi) has responded to a complaint alleging that fake negative reviews were posted on its platform for a restaurant prior to its official opening. The issue came to light when automotive blogger @Han Lu reported on social media that his restaurant received numerous one-star reviews and comments before it had even opened its doors on October 2.

Amap confirmed in a private message to Han Lu that the comments were "false and abnormal" and have since been processed and removed. The company stated that such fabricated reviews can occur and that they are subject to review and action. The incident has prompted broader discussions about the credibility of online review mechanisms and the challenges businesses face with online defamation.

The company explained that its review system is partly based on whether a user has actually navigated to the location using the app. Reviews verified through actual navigation receive weighted consideration, while comments lacking this verification are subject to de-prioritization or removal. Amap indicated it is continually refining its review mechanisms to provide valuable and authentic user experiences.

In an environment where businesses often face economic pressures, reputational damage from false reviews can be significant. Amap's actions are part of an ongoing effort to maintain platform integrity and protect merchants from unsubstantiated attacks.
