Amazon admits uncertainty in achieving net-zero emissions goal

Amazon has acknowledged uncertainty regarding its ability to meet its ambitious carbon emission reduction targets. Kara Hurst, Amazon's vice president of worldwide sustainability, stated on Tuesday at an Axios event that the company is unsure of the exact methods it will employ to achieve its goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

Hurst indicated that Amazon is "still striving towards that target" but conceded that she could not "sit here and say, ‘We know all the ways that we’re going to do this.’" This admission has prompted broader questions about the responsibility of major corporations in addressing climate change.

Amazon is one of the largest companies globally, with a reported revenue of $717 billion last year, comparable to the economic output of Ireland. The company's significant scale and influence raise expectations for its role in climate action, mirroring a global trend of increasing corporate power alongside governmental influence.

While acknowledging the challenges, Hurst emphasized that tackling climate change requires collaboration between businesses and governments, adding, "Where we can lead, we do." Amazon has been a substantial purchaser of renewable energy and has worked to decrease its carbon intensity, although progress has shown year-to-year fluctuations.
