Amazon applies for license for satellite network with over 5000 satellites
Amazon has filed an application with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch and operate its "Amazon Leo" satellite internet system. The project plans to deploy over 5000 satellites.

Amazon announced on July 27 that it has submitted an application to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch and operate its "Amazon Leo D2D" (Direct to Device) satellite internet system.
According to Amazon's plans, the Leo D2D system will consist of up to 5,105 low Earth orbit satellites. The service aims to provide direct-to-device connectivity to customers globally, with deployment expected to begin in 2028. The satellites will support on-orbit signal processing and inter-satellite optical links for enhanced efficiency.
The D2D system is designed to work in conjunction with Leo's existing first and second-generation satellite broadband systems, as well as Globalstar's HIBLEO and C-3 satellite constellations. This will extend Leo's satellite connectivity directly to compatible mobile devices.
Amazon states that the D2D system will complement Leo's existing core broadband services by providing high-speed connectivity directly to compatible mobile devices. It is anticipated to support various functions, including disaster response, fleet management, remote operations, and Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity.
