Amazon begins layoffs in artificial intelligence division

Amazon has begun layoffs within its division focused on artificial general intelligence (AGI), Reuters reported on Wednesday. The move follows a series of senior executive departures and prior, smaller-scale reductions in force.

Artificial general intelligence aims to create AI systems with intelligence surpassing human capabilities, enabling autonomous learning and growth. Many leading AI companies are pursuing similar technologies to address highly complex problems.

"By further concentrating our resources on the projects that matter most to our customers and accelerating the progress of truly vital work, we are making difficult but necessary decisions, including saying goodbye to some people from the AGI team," an Amazon spokesperson told Reuters. The spokesperson confirmed that the decision involves cutting certain roles.

Rohit Prasad, who led AGI efforts, departed last year, and David Luann, head of the AGI lab, left in February. In December, Amazon consolidated its AGI efforts under a larger division led by Peter DeSantis.

Employees within teams overseen by Adib Shana, vice president of AGI data services, and Vishal Sharma, vice president of AGI information, have posted on online forums indicating they are affected by the layoffs. The total number of employees impacted by this round of cuts remains unconfirmed.

Pursuant to earlier actions, Amazon conducted a broader global layoff impacting approximately 16,000 employees in January.
