Amazon Cuts Jobs While Recruiting Former Employees
Amazon has reduced its workforce by fewer than 1,000 white-collar employees, while also recruiting former workers for AI roles, indicating shifting company priorities.

E-commerce giant Amazon has continued its trend of workforce reductions, confirming it has cut fewer than 1,000 white-collar positions. The majority of these layoffs impacted the Stores unit, which manages the company's primary e-commerce website. Concurrently, Amazon is recruiting former employees for artificial intelligence (AI) positions, signaling a strategic shift in its operational focus.
The recent cuts follow a period of significant layoffs last year, during which nearly 30,000 employees were dismissed. This latest round of reductions coincides with Amazon's major shopping event, Prime Day. The ongoing workforce adjustments have reportedly led to anxiety among remaining staff, with employees seeking clues about potential future cuts.
Amazon founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos previously attributed last year's large-scale layoffs to overhiring during the pandemic. He cited the surge in online orders during that period as a factor that led to a substantial increase in headcount.
The company's current strategy appears to prioritize growth in AI. By onboarding new talent for these emerging fields while streamlining other areas, Amazon is adapting to rapid technological advancements and evolving market demands within the broader technology sector.
