Amazon EC2 Launches Second-Generation FPGA-Powered F2 Instances

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched its new Amazon EC2 F2 instances, featuring second-generation Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology. These instances are equipped with up to eight AMD FPGAs, AMD EPYC (Milan) processors with up to 192 cores, and High Bandwidth Memory (HBM).

The new F2 instances offer significant improvements in performance and memory bandwidth compared to the previous generation. They are optimized to accelerate computations in demanding workloads such as genomics, multimedia processing, big data analytics, satellite communications, networking, silicon simulation, and live video processing.

FPGAs provide a flexible approach to hardware-based solutions. Unlike custom-built chips designed for a single function, FPGAs can be reprogrammed after deployment, enabling parallel processing and custom data paths. This makes them effective for workloads that benefit from hardware acceleration.

AWS previously utilized FPGA technology with customers through its first-generation F1 instances. The F2 instances continue this trajectory, offering enhanced computational capabilities and versatility in the cloud.
