Amazon EC2 Marks 15 Years of Optimizing and Saving IT Costs

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is marking 15 years of its Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) service. Since its initial launch with the m1.small instance in August 2006, EC2 has fundamentally changed how customers procure and consume compute resources.

The service has significantly expanded its offerings over the past 15 years. AWS now provides over 400 instance types designed for a wide array of needs, including recently launched GPU-optimized EC2 G4 instances. The selection encompasses general purpose, compute-optimized, and memory-optimized instances, catering to diverse workloads.

To assist users in identifying the most suitable instances for their requirements, AWS offers tools such as the Instance Type Explorer. This feature allows customers to quickly narrow down choices based on categories like compute, memory, networking, and region.

Throughout its evolution, EC2 has focused on optimizing IT costs for its users and enabling significant savings. The extensive range of instance types and the availability of management tools support this ongoing objective.
