Amazon forms coalition to make sustainable fashion affordable
Amazon's Climate Pledge initiative has launched a new fashion coalition aiming to make sustainable materials more affordable and achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.

Amazon's Climate Pledge initiative has established the Climate Pledge Fashion Coalition, a program designed to advance sustainable fashion and increase its affordability. The coalition, comprising over 60 fashion brands, manufacturers, and material innovators, aims to unite the industry in a collective effort to reduce emissions.
The program addresses the challenge of high emissions within the fashion sector. Coalition members gain access to a library featuring more than 100 decarbonization solutions, offering guidance on fiber usage and supplier directories. The initiative is also exploring financing models for promising material technologies.
"Fashion is a pretty personal thing for people," stated Sally Fouts, director of The Climate Pledge. She highlighted that many industry players operate on thin profit margins, making it difficult to adopt more expensive, sustainable materials. The coalition seeks to aggregate demand, enabling material producers to scale up production and subsequently lower costs.
Participating companies commit to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement timeline. They are also required to regularly measure and report their emissions. While the coalition includes prominent brands like Stella McCartney and Brooks Running, many currently focus on higher-priced goods. However, the long-term goal is to involve manufacturers of more affordable apparel as material costs decrease.
