Amazon Funds New Nuclear Power Plant in Indiana

Amazon has entered into an agreement with X-energy and American Electric Power (AEP) to fund the construction of a new nuclear energy facility in Indiana. The proposed plant would replace the now defunct coal-fueled Breed Generating Station in Fairbanks, Sullivan County.

The facility is intended to supply up to 960 megawatts of carbon-free energy, which will be delivered to both the regional power grid and Amazon's data centers. No specific timeline for construction or operation has been announced.

Amazon stated that the project could create approximately 1,000 construction jobs and 100 permanent roles once operational. The Indiana facility aims to deploy 12 Xe-100 SMRs (Small Modular Reactors). These are advanced, though yet unproven, reactor designs focused on safety and modularity.

This investment aligns with Amazon's broader sustainability goals, including its commitment to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. The company is exploring various clean energy sources to power its extensive operations.
