Amazon GameLift Expands to Offer Game Streaming

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the launch of Amazon GameLift Streams, a new feature designed to assist game developers and publishers in delivering streaming game experiences directly to players. This expansion of the existing Amazon GameLift service, previously focused on hosting game servers, enables games to be streamed at up to 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second, eliminating the need for downloads or installations.

The new GameLift Streams capability supports various 3D game engines without requiring modifications. Games can be deployed on managed GPU instances in the cloud and streamed to players via AWS's global network backbone. The service aims to reduce the need for developers to invest heavily in their own infrastructure and software development to build custom game streaming services.

Amazon GameLift has been available since 2016 for scalable game server hosting. With the introduction of the Streams feature, the previous functionalities have been rebranded as Amazon GameLift Servers. The service is intended to provide players with rapid access to games, playable within seconds via a web browser on devices including iOS, Android, and PCs.

Developers can integrate the Amazon GameLift Streams SDK with their existing identity services, storefronts, and websites. The platform also provides tools for monitoring active streams and usage within the AWS console, facilitating seamless scaling as player counts grow.
