Amazon Hardware Lead: In-house Chips Reshaping Immersive AI Experiences
Amazon's hardware chief, Panos Panay, stated the company is using proprietary chips to enhance immersive AI experiences in consumer electronics. This move signals a deeper integration of hardware and software across its product lines.

Amazon is leveraging its own custom-designed chips to redefine the immersive artificial intelligence (AI) experience in its consumer electronics, according to Panos Panay, Amazon's head of hardware.
Panay confirmed that the company's proprietary AZ3 and AZ3 Pro chips are powering several Echo smart audio devices scheduled for release in 2025. Additionally, Fire TV devices are also equipped with the company's custom silicon. While Amazon increases its reliance on in-house chip development, it will continue to utilize system-on-chip (SoC) solutions from external partners like Qualcomm.
"For some of our more critical devices, our focus is on end-to-end chip solutions," Panay explained. He highlighted that achieving deep hardware-software integration and providing secure, immersive experiences at home necessitates careful consideration of how to implement comprehensive hardware solutions.
Looking ahead, Panay anticipates that consumer electronics may be moving away from a purely application- and screen-centric world, with "conversation and context" becoming more critical for AI assistants. Amazon also has a roadmap for smart wearable mobile devices, and Panay suggested consumers will not have to wait long for new product introductions.
