Amazon increases starting hourly wage to $20, adds employee discounts
Amazon is raising the starting hourly wage for its U.S. full-time operations employees to $20, effective September 27. New benefits, including grocery discounts, will also be available starting October 1.
Amazon announced Wednesday it is increasing the starting hourly wage for its U.S. full-time operations employees, such as warehouse workers, by $1 to $20.
The increase means the average wage will be nearly $24 an hour. Average total compensation, including benefits, will exceed $32 an hour, according to the company. The pay increase is effective September 27.
The online retailer also announced new benefits for employees, including a 10% discount on eligible fresh groceries and everyday essentials purchased online at Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market. Employees will also receive a 20% discount at physical Whole Foods stores. These discounts can be combined with existing Prime member discounts and will be available to all U.S. employees starting October 1.
Additionally, Amazon is rolling out access to a membership in First Tech Federal Credit Union for qualified employees and their families. This membership provides low-cost banking services, including accounts with no overdraft or monthly maintenance fees, and requires no credit history to open. This program will begin rolling out later this year.
