Amazon Integrates MSK and EventBridge for Event-Driven Architectures

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has outlined methods for developers to integrate Amazon Managed Streaming for Apache Kafka (MSK) and Amazon EventBridge in the creation of event-driven architectures (EDAs).

Event-driven architectures are based on immutable facts, known as events, allowing businesses deeper insights into customer behavior and enabling faster decision-making. Event brokers, such as Apache Kafka and Amazon EventBridge, play a critical role. Amazon MSK provides a managed Kafka service, while EventBridge acts as a serverless event bus that routes data between various sources and targets.

AWS highlights that while both technologies can serve as the backbone of an EDA, they were developed for different problem statements and possess distinct features. If a use case is clearly defined, such as event streaming and analytics with Kafka, or application integration with discrete events via EventBridge, the choice may be straightforward.

However, for more complex organizational needs, relying on a single broker technology is often insufficient. AWS suggests that combining complementary broker technologies, leveraging their unique strengths, is a robust approach for building user-friendly and maintainable EDAs. This can facilitate real-time analytics and complex computations directly from event streams.
