Amazon Seeks FCC Approval for Global Satellite Handset Network
Amazon has filed an FCC application to launch a new satellite constellation in 2028, aiming to provide direct-to-device satellite service for voice, messaging, data, and emergency calls.
Amazon has submitted an application to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to establish a new constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). If approved, the company intends to begin deploying the 5,105-satellite system in 2028.
The network is designed to offer direct satellite connectivity to mobile devices for voice, messaging, data, and emergency services. Amazon plans to partner with mobile network operators to provide this service, similar to the arrangement between Starlink and T-Mobile.
Earlier this year, Amazon announced its acquisition of Globalstar's satellite network. This deal includes provisions for providing direct satellite service to Apple devices.
The planned deployment of the satellite network by 2028 marks a strategic move by Amazon to expand its global reach in communication services.
