Amazon seeks FCC license for mobile satellite network

Amazon has filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for a license to operate a new network of 5,105 satellites. The primary goal of this network is to provide direct satellite connectivity to mobile phones, with initial launches planned for 2028.

The move follows Amazon's recent acquisition of Globalstar's satellite operations, which currently provide emergency connectivity for Apple iPhones and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Amazon intends to leverage Globalstar's licensed radio spectrum to expand these services and integrate them with its own LEO (Low Earth Orbit) broadband satellite network.

This initiative intensifies competition in the satellite-to-mobile services market, particularly challenging SpaceX, which has been a dominant player in both satellite internet and direct-to-device connectivity. SpaceX itself has outlined significant investments for building out its own mobile constellation, as noted in its IPO filings.

However, the long-term value and demand for satellite-based mobile connections remain uncertain. Current offerings typically provide limited bandwidth, suitable mainly for basic text messaging or emergency communications. The CEO of T-Mobile, a partner using SpaceX satellites, has previously commented on the evolving nature of this market.
