Amazon to Build New Robot Factory in US With Over $100 Million Investment

Amazon is investing more than $100 million to construct a new robot manufacturing plant in Greenwood, Indiana, with operations expected to commence in 2028. The company aims to expand its robotics production capacity to further automate warehouse operations.

The new facility is projected to create 300 technical manufacturing and engineering positions, offering an average annual salary nearing $100,000. This wage level significantly exceeds the median household income in Indiana. The location was chosen partly due to the state's established manufacturing base and Amazon's existing presence in the region.

This investment is part of Amazon's broader strategy to increase robotics deployment within its logistics network. The company previously announced plans for another robotics manufacturing center in Austin, Texas. Upon completion of these new facilities, Amazon will operate four robotics manufacturing plants in the U.S., up from the current two. Amazon's involvement in robotics dates back to its 2012 acquisition of Kiva Systems.

Amazon states its robotics initiatives have led to a more than 40% reduction in recordable workplace injuries and created high-paying tech roles. However, the company faces public scrutiny regarding AI's impact on employment, with a majority of Americans anticipating job losses due to AI in the coming decades. Amazon has also recently raised the starting wage for its full-time core operations employees in the U.S. to $20 per hour.
