Amazon to Expand Prime Air Drone Deliveries to 500 U.S. Towns
Amazon announced plans to expand its Prime Air drone delivery service to nearly 500 towns across the United States by the end of the year. This move will approximately sextuple the service's current reach.

Amazon announced a significant expansion of its Prime Air drone delivery service, with plans to extend it to nearly 500 towns across the United States by the end of this year. This expansion is expected to roughly sextuple the service's current coverage area, aiming to reach tens of millions of consumers.
The Prime Air drone delivery service was initially announced in December 2013, but regulatory and technical hurdles delayed its wider rollout. Small-scale deliveries commenced in the U.S. in December 2022. Currently, Prime Air operates from 11 delivery stations across seven states, handling packages under 5 pounds and fitting within shoebox dimensions, with deliveries possible in as little as 30 minutes.
The target of nearly 500 towns represents a substantial increase from the current 11 operational delivery stations. Each station serves an area of approximately 175 square miles. Industry analysts suggest this implies a significant increase in the number of delivery stations, potentially nearing 70, to achieve the stated coverage.
Amazon's expansion occurs amid growing competition in the drone delivery sector. Alphabet's Wing is also scaling its services in the U.S., aiming for widespread consumer coverage by 2027. Uber has partnered with Zipline, targeting one million drone deliveries daily by the end of 2029. Amazon's move signals confidence in drone technology's role in future logistics.
