Amazon to phase out Fire HD tablet line

Amazon has announced the discontinuation of its Fire HD tablet line, signaling a shift in the company's hardware strategy. The move prioritizes the development and sale of more expensive Alexa-focused tablets, ending the company's long-standing presence in the budget tablet market.

As part of the transition, Amazon has reduced the price of the Fire HD 10 to $72.99, a significant discount from its $139.99 retail price. While the device does not offer the high-end processing power of modern flagship tablets, Amazon has confirmed that it will continue to receive security updates for the foreseeable future.

The Fire HD 10 features a 10.1-inch 1080p display, expandable storage via microSD, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Unlike the upcoming Alexa tablets that support the Google Play Store, the Fire HD 10 runs on Amazon’s proprietary Fire OS. While users can sideload Android applications, the device's hardware limitations may affect the performance of certain software.

The discontinuation of the Fire HD series marks a strategic pivot for Amazon, which is moving away from low-cost consumer hardware toward more integrated smart home devices. Current inventory reductions serve as the final phase for the legacy budget lineup.
