Amazon Web Services to Invest Over $1 Billion in Data Center Communities
Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced plans to invest over $1 billion in U.S. data center communities over the next five years. The investment aims to address the impact of data centers on local electricity and water resources.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) intends to invest more than $1 billion over the next five years in communities hosting its data centers across the United States. The company stated the funds are intended to mitigate the impact of data centers on local electricity and water resources.
AWS has also committed to achieving "water positive" status for all its data centers by 2030, meaning they will return more water to surrounding communities than they consume. The company reported it has already achieved 75% of this goal.
The initiative comes amid growing opposition in various U.S. communities to the construction of new data centers. Concerns over significant electricity consumption and water usage by these facilities have become a prominent issue, with this opposition intensifying ahead of the November midterm elections.
The company's investment will encompass areas such as education, job training, and water and energy conservation projects. AWS also indicated it is considering pausing construction on over 100 data center projects in response to these concerns.
