Amazon Web Services (AWS) is upgrading its Just Walk Out system, a technology designed for checkout-free retail, with new multimodal foundation models. The system processes inputs from overhead video cameras, weight sensors on shelves, and digital product catalogs to automatically track items and generate receipts for shoppers.
The update incorporates a transformer-based architecture similar to those used in generative AI. By shifting to this multimodal approach, AWS aims to address complex long-tail shopping scenarios that previously challenged the system's accuracy, specifically seeking to maintain reliability in crowded or atypical store environments.
Just Walk Out is currently deployed in over 180 third-party locations, including airports, stadiums, and university campuses. By utilizing these new models, the company intends to reduce deployment costs and expand the feasibility of the technology across a wider array of retail use cases.
