Ambient air pollution causes millions of premature deaths globally
Ambient air pollution, primarily fine particulate matter, leads to an estimated 4.2 million premature deaths worldwide annually. The majority of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.

Ambient (outdoor) air pollution is a major environmental risk to health, affecting people in low-, middle-, and high-income countries alike. According to 2019 estimates, outdoor air pollution in cities and rural areas worldwide causes 4.2 million premature deaths each year.
Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is identified as the primary culprit, contributing to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, as well as cancer. In 2019, approximately 68% of these premature deaths were attributed to ischemic heart disease and stroke, 14% to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), 14% to acute lower-respiratory infections, and 4% to lung cancer.
Low- and middle-income countries bear a disproportionate burden, accounting for 89% of the 4.2 million premature deaths. The WHO regions of South-East Asia and the Western Pacific report the highest numbers. In 2019, 99% of the global population lived in areas that did not meet WHO's air quality guidelines.
Addressing air pollution requires concerted policy action across sectors such as energy, transport, waste management, urban planning, and agriculture. Implementing cleaner technologies, promoting sustainable transport, improving building energy efficiency, and enhancing waste management can significantly reduce outdoor pollution levels.
Many policy examples have shown success in reducing air pollution, including transitioning to cleaner electricity generation, prioritizing public transport and active mobility in cities, and utilizing cleaner fuels and vehicles. Investments in non-polluting domestic energy solutions also contribute significantly to reducing ambient air pollution in some regions.
