AMC Launches Film Distribution Unit to Fill Empty Screens
Movie theater chain AMC announced the creation of Leawood Films, a new distribution company aiming to bring more movies to theaters. The move addresses the issue of underutilized screens, though initial releases are not expected until 2027.

AMC Theatres, the world's largest cinema operator, has announced the formation of Leawood Films, a new distribution company. CEO Adam Aron stated the company's objective is to address "substantial excess capacity" within the movie theater industry. Leawood Films will focus on distributing small and mid-sized features, aiming to provide a more consistent flow of content beyond major blockbusters.
The initiative comes as the cinema industry faces a challenge in maintaining consistent audience numbers. While AMC reported its highest-grossing weekend historically, overall attendance has not fully recovered to pre-pandemic levels. Increased ticket prices, particularly for premium formats, have boosted revenue but do not solve the underlying issue of fewer patrons.
Industry analysts point out the risks of relying solely on blockbusters. As major studios increasingly prioritize franchise films and direct-to-streaming releases, a gap has emerged in the market for mid-budget dramas, romantic comedies, and R-rated comedies, genres that previously helped fill cinema schedules.
Leawood Films' first releases are not anticipated before 2027 or 2028, allowing time to build its film slate. AMC aims for this new distribution arm to help stabilize film release patterns and support the long-term viability of its theater operations.
