AMD Launches Helios AI System to Challenge Nvidia, Adds Microsoft as Customer
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has unveiled its Helios rack-scale AI system, its most direct challenge to Nvidia to date. Microsoft announced it will deploy the system within its Azure data centers.
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has introduced Helios, its first rack-scale system designed for artificial intelligence workloads. This launch marks AMD's most significant move to directly compete with Nvidia's dominant AI hardware offerings.
Microsoft announced on Monday that it will deploy AMD's Helios system in its Azure data centers, joining other early adopters such as Meta, OpenAI, and Oracle. AMD plans to begin shipping the Helios systems to customers, including Microsoft, later this year.
The Helios system is intended to provide businesses with the performance and scale necessary for developing and running advanced AI applications. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated in a press release that Helios will enhance Azure's infrastructure portfolio, providing customers with greater choice.
The adoption of Helios is part of a broader industry effort by major tech companies to secure substantial computing power for AI development. AMD reports that eight of the top ten AI companies are currently utilizing its Instinct GPUs for their workloads.
