AMD shifts focus to high-end desktop gaming segment

AMD plans to prioritize high-performance desktop gaming while scaling back on Ryzen 3 processors, favoring APUs for entry-level computing needs.

AMD is narrowing its strategic focus for the desktop market, emphasizing high-performance gaming hardware. Travis Kirsch, the company's director of client product management, stated in a recent interview that the high-end segment currently represents the firm's primary battlefield in the desktop space.

Regarding the lack of new Ryzen 3 desktop chips, Kirsch explained that this product segment has been largely superseded by mobile processor offerings. The company contends that applying its standard chiplet-based 'CCD + IOD' architecture to low-end Ryzen 3 processors is not cost-effective, limiting the viability of traditional desktop models in that tier.

Instead, AMD is positioning integrated APUs as the preferred solution for budget-conscious consumers requiring basic graphical capabilities. By utilizing monolithic APU designs, the company aims to meet entry-level performance demands without the overhead associated with its high-end multi-chip designs.
