AMD to Acquire AI Firm World Labs for $8.2 Billion

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced Monday it has entered into an agreement to acquire World Labs, an artificial intelligence laboratory based in San Francisco. The deal is valued at approximately $8.2 billion and will be an all-stock transaction. AMD had previously invested in World Labs.
World Labs specializes in developing "world models," a type of AI model capable of simulating 3D environments. Researchers believe these models can significantly advance the development of robots and other physically grounded AI applications. This acquisition represents AMD's most substantial move into the AI M&A market to date.
The purchase is AMD's second-largest on record, following its approximately $50 billion acquisition of Xilinx in 2022. The move comes as major technology companies are actively acquiring AI talent and firms, even those in early stages of development. Competitors like OpenAI and Nvidia have also made significant AI-related acquisitions recently.
World Labs was founded by AI researcher Fei-Fei Li, a prominent figure in the field. Li will join AMD as its chief scientist and an executive vice president. AMD plans to keep World Labs separate from its chip manufacturing operations until the transaction closes later this year, aiming to leverage its research for future AI chip development.
