Chipmaker AMD announced on September 28 that it has agreed to acquire World Labs, a San Francisco-based artificial intelligence laboratory, for approximately $8.2 billion in an all-stock transaction. World Labs specializes in the development of world models capable of simulating three-dimensional environments.
As part of the deal, World Labs founder Fei-Fei Li, a Stanford professor and former head of AI research at Google, will join AMD as chief scientist and executive vice president. AMD anticipates the transaction will be completed later this year.
This acquisition marks AMD's second-largest on record, following its 2022 purchase of Xilinx. It also represents AMD's most significant move in the AI sector to date, amidst substantial investments by technology firms to secure leading research talent.
The deal is expected to enhance AMD's AI capabilities, adding to its recent acquisition of Silo AI in August 2024. The integration of World Labs' simulation technology could accelerate AMD's advancements in AI compute.
