AMD to acquire AI research lab World Labs for $8.2 billion

Technology firm AMD has reached a definitive agreement to acquire World Labs, an artificial intelligence research laboratory co-founded by Fei-Fei Li. The all-stock transaction is valued at approximately $8.2 billion and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, pending regulatory approval.
World Labs specializes in developing spatial intelligence models. These models are designed to generate, reconstruct, and simulate interactive three-dimensional environments, a capability relevant to fields such as virtual and augmented reality, as well as robotics.
Following the acquisition's closure, Fei-Fei Li will join AMD in the role of executive vice president and chief scientist. Li is a recognized figure in AI research.
The acquisition is anticipated to enhance AMD's capabilities in the artificial intelligence sector, integrating World Labs' expertise and technology into AMD's operations. This move signals a significant investment in AI research by a major semiconductor manufacturer.
