American Express is expanding its airport lounge network with the opening of a new Centurion Lounge at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol on September 17. The new facility is the first Centurion Lounge on mainland Europe and is located at one of the continent's busiest international hubs.
The nearly 6,000-square-foot lounge provides eligible American Express cardholders with another option, intensifying competition among credit card companies for airport lounge access in Europe. In 2025, Schiphol handled 68.8 million passengers and offered direct connections to 301 destinations.
The lounge's design draws inspiration from Amsterdam and the Netherlands, featuring blues, greens, and earth tones. Interior details include black quartzite, brass accents, and wood, alongside artwork from local Dutch artists. The food and beverage offerings will feature seasonal dishes inspired by local and European flavors, with drinks incorporating both local and global influences.
Airport lounges have become a key battleground for premium travel credit cards. American Express's Global Lounge Collection now includes over 1,550 lounges worldwide, encompassing both its own Centurion Lounges and partner locations. The company also has plans for new lounges at Newark Liberty International Airport and Boston Logan International Airport in the US.
The Amsterdam opening is a strategic addition, as Schiphol serves as a major international gateway. It allows American Express to increase the visibility of its branded lounge experience to a broader international traveler base, rather than relying solely on partner lounges.
