American Lung Association launches campaign to address delayed PAH diagnosis

The American Lung Association is addressing the complexities of diagnosing pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) through a new national campaign. PAH is a progressive disease that causes the small arteries in the lungs to thicken and narrow, resulting in abnormally high blood pressure between the lungs and the heart. With only 500 to 1,000 new cases identified in the U.S. annually, the condition is often under-recognized.

CEO Harold Wimmer stated that research indicates a lengthy and frustrating diagnostic journey for many patients. The campaign aims to educate healthcare providers and the public to identify early warning signs, reducing the frequency of misdiagnoses, such as confusing the condition with asthma. Real-life narratives from patients are being used to highlight the necessity of early intervention and the benefits of supportive care communities.

While there is currently no cure for PAH, treatment plans—which may include medication, pulmonary rehabilitation, and lifestyle adjustments—can help patients manage the condition. Supported by Merck, the initiative provides new resources, including an online course on disease basics and a dedicated helpline to assist patients in navigating diagnosis and treatment options.
