The American Lung Association is encouraging schools nationwide to join its "Clean Air School Challenge" program, designed to enhance indoor air quality. Millions of children and adults are exposed to poor indoor air in schools daily, a significant environmental health risk. Currently, more than half of K-12 schools lack formal plans to manage indoor air quality.

The program offers public, charter, and tribal K-12 schools training, resources, technical assistance, peer mentorship, and recognition. It also includes opportunities for mini-grants and participation in learning collaboratives. "Energy management is also a key focus, as it is the second-largest cost for K-12 schools. By conserving energy, schools can reduce their dependence on fossil fuels which contribute to outdoor air pollution," stated Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association, highlighting the program's importance for children's health and learning.

Poor indoor air quality in classrooms can reduce student focus, trigger allergic reactions, asthma flare-ups, headaches, and fatigue. It can also facilitate the spread of airborne bacteria and viruses, leading to increased absenteeism and decreased academic achievement. Students with asthma, disabilities, or underlying health conditions, as well as those in underserved communities, face disproportionately higher health risks.

The Lung Association has partnered with nearly 200 schools, improving air quality and safeguarding the health of over 66,000 children through the "Clean Air School Challenge." Schools interested in participating can find more information at Lung.org/casc.
