Americans Moving Abroad as Digital Nomads

A record number of Americans are leaving the United States to become digital nomads, according to recent studies. In 2025, the U.S. experienced negative net migration, and a 2025 MBO Partners report found 18.5 million Americans were digital nomads, a 153 percent increase since 2019.

Americans are seeking overseas cities for their lower cost of living, better business environments, long-term visa options, and more affordable healthcare. They are also utilizing geoarbitrage to save money and reinvest in their business growth.

Among popular European destinations is Lisbon, Portugal, noted for its climate, food, exploration opportunities, and a strong community of remote workers. Portugal's D8 visa facilitates residency and remote work for foreigners. A monthly budget of $1,600 to $3,000 is considered comfortable for living in Lisbon.

In Asia, Bangkok is highlighted as a significant business hub. Thailand introduced its Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) in 2024, attracting over 35,000 applicants in its first year, drawing entrepreneurs and remote workers with its opportunities.
