Americans Prioritize Summer Travel Despite Rising Costs
A significant majority of Americans plan to travel this summer, even as prices for flights and hotels increase. Younger demographics, in particular, view vacations as non-negotiable.

Americans are demonstrating a strong commitment to summer travel, with a majority planning trips despite rising costs for transportation and accommodation. Data from the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) indicates that 56 percent of Americans intend to take a summer trip, and 69 percent consider summer vacations essential.
Younger Generations Prioritize Vacations
Vacations are increasingly viewed as a non-negotiable aspect of life, especially among younger demographics. According to AHLA, 75 percent of Gen Z and 78 percent of Millennials plan to travel this summer. This trend suggests that individuals are protecting and prioritizing their vacation time and experiences, even with increased expenses.
Rising Costs Drive Creative Travel Solutions
Transportation expenses, including gasoline and airfare, have seen substantial increases over the past year, with prices rising by 28.4 percent and 20.7 percent respectively. To manage these higher costs, consumers are adopting creative strategies. Many are choosing destinations closer to home, opting for trips that offer enhanced amenities, and utilizing travel credits from airlines and credit card rewards programs.
Domestic Travel Sees Increased Interest
Domestic travel has experienced a notable surge this summer. Some travelers, like Adam Yamada from Maryland, are leveraging Southwest Airlines flight credits for their trips and considering additional domestic travel. A report by Expedia found that 51 percent of U.S. respondents are more enthusiastic about visiting domestic destinations this summer compared to last year. Others are shortening their travel routes or carpooling due to high gasoline prices.
