Americans View Frozen Treats as Cheaper Alternative to Dining Out Desserts
A new survey indicates 72% of Americans find frozen treats more affordable and convenient than restaurant desserts. Many are stocking up year-round.

Americans increasingly view ice cream and frozen novelties as an easy, affordable pleasure, according to new research from the National Frozen & Refrigerated Foods Association (NFRA). Nearly three-quarters of adults report that having frozen treats at home provides a convenient dessert option that feels more economical than dining out.
The survey found that 72% of Americans agree a frozen treat can be a satisfying snack, not just an after-dinner dessert. NFRA President and CEO Tricia Greyshock stated that frozen treats offer consumers an easy way to create a small moment of enjoyment at home, often purchased without a specific craving or occasion in mind.
While hot weather and summer cravings remain the top drivers for purchasing frozen treats, cited by 43% of adults, everyday needs play a significant role. 35% buy them as an easy at-home dessert, 31% are motivated by sales or coupons, and 29% purchase them because someone in the household asks. This indicates frozen treats are becoming part of household routines year-round.
Consumers also prioritize portion size and ease of serving. Seven in 10 consumers say they would rather enjoy a smaller portion of a frozen treat they truly love than a larger portion of something they enjoy less. Two-thirds are more likely to keep frozen treats at home when they come in formats that are easy to serve or share, such as mini cones or snack-sized bars.
Findings also revealed consumer interest in seasonal flavors and new formats. 64% would be likely to try a limited-time summer or seasonal flavor, and 63% expressed interest in new formats like bites, cones, and sandwiches. These options offer consumers more ways to match a frozen treat to the moment, complementing traditional favorites.
