Analysis of CEO time allocation reveals focus on leadership and clients

Data collected from nine executives across various sectors indicates that modern CEOs prioritize human capital and client relationships above other operational tasks. Many participants, including leaders from Pacsun and David’s Bridal, reported spending roughly 30% of their time in direct interaction with their senior leadership teams, emphasizing the importance of one-on-one coaching and strategic oversight.

Client engagement emerged as another primary focus area. Honeywell Technologies CEO Vimal Kapur stated that he allocates 40% of his schedule to customers and partners, a strategy he says keeps him grounded in the realities of the business. This finding contrasts with older research suggesting that CEOs spend a much smaller percentage of time in direct contact with their client base.

Regarding modern tools, respondents noted that artificial intelligence has become a useful resource for synthesizing data and preparing for meetings, though it has not altered the core requirements of the role. Most executives also attempt to carve out 5% to 15% of their time for reflection and unstructured thinking, acknowledging that such efforts often occur outside of formal calendar blocks.
