Angela Merkel's Post-Chancellorship: Privileges and Activities
Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel continues to receive privileges such as personal security and an office. She has also released her autobiography.
After serving 16 years as German Chancellor, Angela Merkel stepped down in December 2021. Her tenure was marked by significant leadership during European crises and major policy decisions.
As an ex-chancellor, Merkel is entitled to ongoing privileges, including personal security and a dedicated office in the Bundestag in Berlin. This office, managed by her long-time aide, is equipped with staff to support her post-chancellorship activities, such as public speaking engagements.
Merkel also receives a monthly pension estimated at around 15,000 euros, reflecting her extensive time in office. She has reportedly declined offers to take on new official roles.
Recently, Merkel has gained public attention with the release of her memoir, "Freiheit," in November 2024. She has also spoken about her interest in historical figures like Queen Elizabeth II and her enjoyment of films and books. In June 2022, she met with former U.S. President Barack Obama.
