Anheuser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth to Depart Company

Brendan Whitworth, who has served as CEO of Anheuser-Busch since 2021, is set to depart the company at the end of this month. Whitworth will be leaving the beverage industry to join the luxury gym chain Equinox.

Parent company AB InBev stated that the North American regional leadership team will report directly to Group CEO Michel Doukeris until a successor is named. The transition follows a period in which the company has focused on stabilizing its U.S. portfolio amidst shifting market dynamics and fluctuating sales volumes.

Industry analysts have reacted to the news with scrutiny regarding the company’s succession planning. DJ Schepker, a professor of strategic management at the University of South Carolina, noted that the reliance on a temporary reporting structure suggests potential gaps in the internal leadership pipeline. Conversely, some observers characterize the move as a standard career transition for a high-profile executive.

As the company searches for new leadership, it continues to address challenges within the competitive U.S. beer market. The firm maintains that its long-term strategy for wholesaler alignment and brand portfolio management remains in place.
