Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock took over the chairmanship of the board of Aktion Deutschland Hilft on November 10, 2022. She highlighted the importance of humanitarian aid and the necessity of combating global hunger.
Baerbock spoke of her travels to Mali and Niger, emphasizing how the climate crisis exacerbates suffering and hunger in many regions. She stated that support is a matter of life and death for those affected by crises, including in Ukraine, Syria, and Pakistan.
"That we help is part of our identity as a state that places human dignity above all else," Baerbock said. She underscored Aktion Deutschland Hilft's role in uniting German aid organizations for more effective and coordinated assistance.
Manuela Roßbach, Executive Director of Aktion Deutschland Hilft, described Baerbock's appointment as a "strong signal for humanitarian aid and against global hunger." She noted that the climate crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the war in Ukraine have increased the threat of hunger, particularly in the Global South and the Middle East.
As the new chairwoman of the board, Baerbock will work with the 26 other members to advance humanitarian issues and support those in need. The board serves as an advisory body, providing suggestions for the organization's work without decision-making power.
