Annihilation Tide: Character Model Change Sparks Player Controversy
The Chinese action game Annihilation Tide has released new gameplay footage, but an unexpected redesign of protagonist Gwendolyn's face has drawn criticism from parts of the player base.

The Chinese single-player action game "Annihilation Tide" recently unveiled a 40-minute gameplay demonstration. However, beyond the game's flashy combat sequences, an unexpected alteration to protagonist Gwendolyn's appearance has captured significant attention, sparking player debate.
Discussions on the game's Steam community page focus on the character's facial model. Some players contend that Gwendolyn's previous appearance was "much better" and question the development team's decision to modify it. Others have labeled the new design a "visual downgrade," stating the character no longer resembles her look in prior reveals and trailers.
The original facial design for Gwendolyn, featuring a more sculpted, sharp, and realistic profile, had been one of the character's most distinctive features since the game's initial announcement. Many players had grown accustomed to and appreciated this style, which helped her stand out.
This change follows another significant adjustment for Gwendolyn, as her original voice actress, Jennifer English, exited the role in June due to personal health reasons. Eclipse Glow Games stated that English will remain involved as a consultant and assist in finding a new voice actor. A replacement has reportedly begun recording lines for a Gamescom 2026 demonstration.
There is currently no indication that the facial model changes are linked to the voice actor replacement. The development team has not publicly explained the reasoning behind the updated appearance of Gwendolyn, which may be fueling the extensive player discussion. It remains unclear if the final game will feature this new facial design. "Annihilation Tide" is projected for release in Fall 2026 or early 2027.
