ANSI and America Makes Launch Resources for Additive Manufacturing Standards

New York, NY – The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and America Makes have launched two new resources aimed at improving the accessibility and tracking of standards within the additive manufacturing (AM) sector. These tools, comprising a searchable online database and the "September 2026 Gaps Progress Report," are designed to assist manufacturers, regulators, and researchers in understanding the standards crucial for ensuring the safety and consistency of 3D-printed parts, as well as identifying areas requiring further development.

These resources originate from the Additive Manufacturing Standardization Collaborative (AMSC), a joint initiative led by ANSI and America Makes. As AM technology expands across industries such as aerospace, medical devices, automotive, and defense, there is an increasing need to guarantee that parts produced by different entities and on various machines perform reliably and safely. The new database and report offer a comprehensive overview of existing standards, ongoing standardization efforts, and identified gaps.

The AM Standards Database, hosted on the ANSI website, allows users to quickly identify standardization activities across the AM lifecycle, industry sectors, and different standards developing organizations. Search queries can be filtered by criteria such as material, process, and standard type. The database is updated regularly and is available free of charge after a brief registration.

The "September 2026 Gaps Progress Report" provides updates on five of the 141 standardization gaps identified in the AMSC's "Standardization Roadmap for Additive Manufacturing, Version 3.0." The report notes that no new gaps have been identified. This report is a living document that will be periodically updated and republished.
