Antheia Secures $80 Million Conditional Loan Commitment from Defense Department Office
Biosynthesis company Antheia announced a conditional commitment for up to $80 million in direct, long-term loans from the U.S. Department of War's Office of Strategic Capital. The funding aims to bolster domestic manufacturing of critical pharmaceutical ingredients.

MENLO PARK, Calif. – Biosynthesis company Antheia has received a conditional commitment for up to $80 million in direct, long-term loans from the U.S. Department of War's Office of Strategic Capital (OSC). This financing is intended to support Antheia's domestic manufacturing strategy, strengthening the onshoring of critical pharmaceutical ingredients vital for public health and national security.
The United States currently relies on foreign countries for approximately 90 percent of its supply of key starting materials and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). This dependence leaves the nation vulnerable to drug shortages stemming from public health emergencies, natural disasters, or geopolitical tensions.
"America's reliance on foreign suppliers for critical pharmaceutical ingredients has created ongoing public health and national security risks," said Dr. Christina Smolke, CEO of Antheia. "Advanced biomanufacturing offers the U.S. a direct path to securing these supply chains while regaining global leadership in a strategic technology sector."
The conditional financing, combined with additional private capital, will support Antheia's plans to expand its manufacturing capabilities within the U.S. The company has previously received substantial federal funding to enhance the resilience of pharmaceutical supply chains.
Finalization of the loan agreement is contingent upon Antheia meeting various financial, legal, and technical requirements. The initiative aims to secure domestic production of essential drug components and reduce reliance on foreign sources.
