Anthropic Adds Built-In Browser to Claude Code Desktop App

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has added a built-in web browser to the desktop application of its Claude Code development tool. This new functionality allows the AI to interact directly with live web pages, significantly enhancing its ability to process web content.

The feature, currently available only to paid users of Claude Code, mirrors a similar offering from OpenAI. Previously, Claude Code could only access the web through static pages or a separate Chrome extension. The new browser functionality enables direct inspection of website internal code and design elements, streamlining the analysis and troubleshooting of website code.

Claude Code offers tools like the "select element" button, allowing users to feed specific design components to the AI for analysis. The ability to annotate directly on webpages further contributes to smoother developer workflows. The browser is sandboxed, ensuring information is shared only within sessions created within the app.

With the new browser, developers can now browse and analyze websites without leaving the Claude application. This reduces the need to switch between programs and accelerates the process of web scraping or bug analysis. Users can still opt to open links in external browsers if needed.

It is important to note, however, that Claude cannot process content from sites that restrict AI access, such as Reddit and The New York Times. These pages display a warning that Claude cannot assist with the content. The browser is built on the Chromium project, Google's open-source browser platform.
