This discovery represents the first outcome from Anthropic's recently launched wet laboratory. It also serves as an early test of Claude's utility for scientific research as the company prepares for a potential public offering.
Anthropic stated that Claude identified the enzyme system after searching through a vast database of DNA sequences. The company indicated that its scientists' involvement was limited to providing the initial prompt and performing laboratory work. Over a 21-hour period, approximately 950 Claude agents processed 210 million tokens before one agent identified an unusual, repeating pattern within the data.
