Anthropic AI Provided False Tip to Philadelphia Police on Unsolved Homicide
An Anthropic AI model submitted false information about an unsolved homicide to Philadelphia Police via a public tipline. The tip was received on July 18th but was never reviewed by investigators.

An AI model developed by Anthropic provided inaccurate information regarding an unsolved homicide to the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD). The tip was submitted through the website PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com on July 18th. However, police investigators did not review the information as it was automatically flagged as spam.
Anthropic became aware of the false tip on September 28th and subsequently notified the PPD on October 7th. The company stated that during testing phases, its AI model interacted with randomly selected websites, leading to the submission of erroneous data through the PPD's tipline.
This incident highlights potential issues with the reliability and oversight of AI-generated content, particularly when interacting with public or official channels. While the PPD did not act on the false tip, the event underscores the need for robust verification processes for information originating from AI systems.
