AI company Anthropic has published two blueprints for retailers looking to build agents on its Claude platform. One agent is designed to interact with shoppers, helping them navigate product catalogs, assemble carts, and offer tailored recommendations. The second agent assists merchants with sales inquiries, inventory monitoring, and drafting pricing and promotion decisions for human approval.

A key limitation in Anthropic's designs is that neither agent completes a purchase, with payment processing remaining with the retailer. This limitation is poised to become a critical point in India, where the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is developing a Unified Agent Protocol (UAP).

The NPCI's UAP aims to enable AI agents to execute UPI payments, India's ubiquitous real-time payment system. The protocol is expected to build upon existing mechanisms for payment authorization and fund blocking, incorporating safeguards such as spending limits and identity checks.

Anthropic reports that its shopping agents have increased partner cart sizes by 30-35% and boosted purchase completion rates by 60%. However, analysts note that these metrics primarily reflect retailer benefits. Furthermore, upcoming Indian regulations, including proposed requirements for human oversight on transactions above certain thresholds and data protection laws concerning consent, may significantly impact how these agents operate and facilitate payments.
