Anthropic, Blackstone invest in AI implementation services

AI research labs Anthropic and OpenAI are establishing new business units focused on implanting AI technologies within enterprises. Their strategy indicates a shift in focus, betting that the next major economic opportunity in AI lies not in developing models, but in their practical application and integration into business operations.

Ode, an AI implementation company backed by Anthropic, is set to launch with an initial $1.5 billion in funding. Established as a joint venture with investors including Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, and Goldman Sachs, Ode aims to assist companies in deploying AI solutions, addressing what is seen as a critical bottleneck for wider enterprise AI adoption.

The concept for Ode originated from Blackstone, which identified a gap in efficiently implementing AI across its portfolio companies. This led to the acquisition of AI services startup Fractional AI, whose expertise now forms the foundation of Ode. Fractional AI had previously ended an 11-month partnership with OpenAI upon its acquisition.

Ode is positioned as a "scaled boutique" AI services firm. CEO Chris Taylor, also a co-founder of Fractional AI, expressed ambitions for the company to potentially reach a trillion-dollar valuation if executed successfully. The primary challenge, he noted, will be managing hyper-growth without sacrificing the quality of their services.
