AI company Anthropic has reported successfully blocking attempts where its Claude AI model was utilized for research that could have led to the development of dangerous biological threats. According to the company, anonymous researchers asked Claude for assistance with projects that had the potential to create new biological hazards.

The incidents, detailed in a recent Anthropic report, included a request for help in drafting a grant application for "gain of function" research on the Chikungunya virus. This type of research aims to deliberately make pathogens more dangerous or transmissible to better understand their mechanisms of infection. While such research can have legitimate scientific purposes, its potential misuse for developing bioweapons is a significant concern.

In another reported case, researchers attempted to use Claude to develop novel venoms and toxins. Anthropic highlighted that this "dual-use technology" can benefit science, as seen with botulinum toxin (Botox), but can also be weaponized. The company stated its safety mechanisms prevented these requests, acknowledging the challenges in overseeing such advanced models.

Anthropic admits that the models' previous limited scientific capabilities acted as a safeguard. Now, as AI models' scientific reasoning improves, the threat escalates. The situation with open-source AI models, which have fewer safeguards and are rapidly advancing, is particularly worrying.

The company emphasizes that while harmful requests were successfully blocked in these instances, it is impossible to know how many similar requests may have bypassed filters. The rapid advancement of AI presents new security challenges, and the prevention of future pathogen development may increasingly rely on the discretion of malicious actors.
