Anthropic Brings Claude AI Inference To India

AI company Anthropic is bringing in-country inference for its Claude AI model to India through Amazon Web Services' (AWS) managed service, Amazon Bedrock. This move removes a significant barrier for Indian banks, financial institutions, and government agencies looking to deploy international frontier AI models in production.

The capability, set to be available in the coming weeks, signifies the US-based AI firm's expansion into India and reflects a broader trend among global AI players in the Indian market. Local inference allows AI models to process user prompts and generate responses on servers physically located within India. This ensures enterprise data remains within national borders, reduces latency, and helps organizations comply with data residency requirements.

This feature is emerging as a critical enabler for AI adoption in India's enterprise sector. Sector-specific regulations and India's data protection laws mandate that sensitive information be kept within national borders. This has prompted many banks and public agencies to evaluate frontier AI models without the ability to deploy them into production.

Anthropic is not alone in pursuing this strategy. Google recently introduced in-country inference for its Gemini 3.5 Flash model for enterprise customers in India. Domestic foundation model startup Sarvam AI has also centered its sovereign AI strategy around locally hosted inference.

Utilizing Claude via Amazon Bedrock also provides enterprise-grade audit trails, access controls, and governance capabilities required for deploying AI applications. "When that data can stay in India, AI moves from pilots into the systems that matter most," said Irina Ghose, Managing Director for Anthropic India.
